Special Guest Speaker:
Dr. Sciammarella will discuss the current and future state of advanced manufacturing in the US and the importance of STEM education in order to meet our future demands. Dr. Sciammarella is the Interim Chair for Mechanical Engineering Department at Northern Illinois University’s College of Engineering & Engineering Technology where his research is focused on laser enabled manufacturing. As the Director of the Advanced Research of Materials and Manufacturing Laboratory, the current focus is on Additive Manufacturing (AM) /3D Printing. He recently finished a $2.4 Million NIST Measurement Science in Additive Manufacturing award entitled “Development and Validation of Physics-Based Additive Manufacturing Models For Process Control and Quality Assurance” that was a successful collaboration with QCML, Northwestern University, IMEC, FMA, and ASM. They developed a solid foundation for processing control and modeling in metal 3D printing. In 2011 he served as the competency area manager for the Laser Materials Processing Group that is part of the National Laser Centre at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa. Dr. Sciammarella was previously technical chair for the RAPDASA in 2012. He also participated with South Africa’s first technology implementation roadmap for AM. He currently serves on the America Makes Roadmap Advisory Group for AM. This group is providing the vision and direction to America Makes stakeholders and partners in order to accelerate AM technologies and amplify our nation’s global manufacturing competitiveness.
